Greetings from President
Dear members of ISCS and civic groups of S. Korea:
I extend my sincere greetings to all the members of the International Society for Chomskyan Studies (ISCS) and civic groups of South Korea. May peace reside in you and your household.
At the inception of the year 2008, many things are occurring to my mind.
First of all, I am glad to report to you that in 2007 we had a joint Linguistics Conference at Seoul National University in January, having invited many world-renowned scholars like Prof. Neil Smith and others. Prof. Smith gave a lecture on the title of ‘Unification and the Unity of Chomsky’s thought. The conference was said to have brought to productive fruition.
At 2007 Spring Conference held in March, with the conference theme of ‘Language and Politics, a total of ten papers was presented with so many audiences attending. It was at this conference that the then Canadian Ambassador to Korea Mr. Marius Grinius delivered a public lecture on Language and Multiculturalism to not only the members of the society but also to a multitude of both undergraduate and graduate students. We also had an honor of having the presence of a number of civic group members who share a keen interest in Chomsky’s diverse gamut of thinking.
And at our last 2007 Autumn Conference held in October, a surprising number of 16 papers was presented.The nationalities that represent the presenters, moderators, and attendants, and executive officers of the ISCS, etc were well over nine including the U.S.A, the United Kingdom, Canada, Israel, Australia, France, Belgium, Japan, and South Korea. Most noteworthy is that Prof. Roger Bell of Westminster U. gave a lecture on the topic of ‘What would we have done without Chomsky?’ His talk was well received and the audiences seemed to be overjoyed with the breadth and depth of his knowledge of linguistics and other disciplines.
In tandem with these academic activities and endeavors, we also published our journal Chomskyan Studies Vol. 2, No. 1 Summer edition. As you might have observed, the contributors are widely known in each field, including Neil Smith, Denis Florig, and others. The winter edition is also being prepared and is expected to come out soon.
I believe that all these academic growth and excellence would not have been possible without your full support and prop based on attendance, contribution either of papers and finance, and other means of delivering your attention and love to the society. In that sense, I give my heart-felt thanks to all and each of you.
In passing, I also would like to let you know that 2008 Winter Conference will be held this time at Sogang U. on the upcoming January 15 (Tues). A detailed program will be out to you soon. I would like to have the pleasure of your company at the site and am looking forward to seeing you there then.

2008년도를 맞이하여, 국제 촘스키학회 회원 선생님 및 학회와 관련된 여러분들에게 인사를 올립니다.
지난 한 해도 1월부터 본 촘스키학회는 한국언어학회 및 여러 학회와의 공동학회를 열고, 본 학회의 회원이시고 촘스키 관련 학문의 세계적 권위이신 UCL의 Neil Smith교수를 초빙하여 ‘Unification and the Unity of Chomsky’s Thought’ 라는 주제강연을 필두로 많은 국내외 학자들의 발표가 있는 풍성한 학술대회를 가진바 있습니다.
지난 해 3월의 국제 촘스키학회 정기 봄 학술대회에도 Language and Politics session으로 나누어서 총 10편의 훌륭한 논문이 발표되고 proceedings에 수록되었고, 주한 캐나다 대사 Mr. Marius Grinius의 언어와 정치에 관한 강연도 있는 등 열매 맺는 학회를 가졌었는데 수많은 청중으로 인해 입추의 여지가 없는 성황을 이루었습니다.
그리고 지난 10월 6일의 가을 정기 학술대회에서는 아래의 가을 학술대회에 관한 보고서에서도 나와 있지만 발표자 및 참여자들은 미국, 캐나다, 영국, 이스라엘, 오스트렐리아, 프랑스, 일본 및 한국 등 다양한 국적을 가진 학자들이 모여서 정말 풍성한 열매를 맺은 학술대회를 가져서 학문의 고양성을 제고하는 귀한 시간을 가졌습니다. 물론 발표된 논문들이 proceedings에 수록되어 있습니다.
한편, 학회의 저널 Chomskyan studies Vol.2, No.1도 사계의 권위자들이 기고한 논문들이 실려서 발행되었고 Vol.2 No.2 (winter)도 준비 중에 있습니다. 2008(summer)년도에 발행될 Vol.3 No.1 에도 적극적으로 많이 기고해주시면 감사하겠습니다.
학회와 관련된 이러한 발전과 성장 그리고 발전의 신장 이 모든 것이 우리 회원님들의 적극적인 성원으로 이루어졌음을 상기할 때 다시 한번 감사드립니다..
학회의 첫 임기의 마지막 학회행사가 될 겨울학술대회는 이미 공지한대로 08년 1월 15일에 서강대에서 개최됩니다. 적극적인 참석을 해 주시고 또 독려까지 해주시면 좋겠습니다.
언어학(특히 syntax)에서는 Chomsky가 전세계의 90%이상의 이론을 제공한다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것입니다. 날로 변화해가는 이론을 바로 이 촘스키학회를 통해서 호흡하고 보조를 맞추는 것이 전체적으로 dominant thinking인 것 같습니다. 국제정세 및 국제 정치에 대한 촘스키의 비평 또한 Socrates 및 Aristotle 시대의 사회적 비판 이상의 통찰로 간주되고 있습니다. 여러 의미에서 2008년 1월15일의 서강대 겨울학회에 많이 참여해 주시기 바라고 연말연시 좋은 시간 보내시기를 기원 드립니다.
